"I caused a one run deficit," said the New York Yankees first baseman referring to a fielding lapse that led to a run for the Red Sox, "and I just wanted to get one back." He was eventually given the opportunity to "atone for my misplay" and did, in a big way. Watson hit a grand slam home run in the sixth inning, then doubled home the winning run in the 10th inning to pace the Yankees to an 8-5 victory at Fenway Park. "I knew when I hit it that it was go ing to as least hit the wall," said Watson about his first grand slam in the American League. "I was halfway down the first base line when I knew it was going to be out.

I hit a sinker ball. He (reliever Bob Stanley) just made a mistake and I hit it pretty good." Watson's familiarity with the Red Sox pitching staff was as much to his advantage as anything. "Watson played for the Red Sox last year and knows their pitchers better than anybody," said New York Manager Dick Howser. "'He's our most consistent hitter, even though he's been bothered by a broken finger on his left hand this season." The victory kept the Yankees' lead in the AL East at three games over Baltimore, a 6-1 victor over Toronto. In the only other AL game, Kansas City defeated California 7-2.

The Milwaukee Minnesota game was rained out. Watson's homer wiped out a 2-1 Boston lead. Then, after the Red Sox had rallied with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to into a 5-5 tie, the Yankees reached reliever Tom Burgmeier, 4, for three runs in the 10th, including Watson's ringing double to right-center. Reliever Ron Davis, 7-10, gained the victory. Orioles 6, Blue Jays 1 Steve Stone won his 23rd game of the season, scattering eight hits as Baltimore beat Toronto.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Orioles, who supported Stone with eight walks, four stolen bases and 11 hits, four of them singles by Al Bumbry. Stone, the winningest pitcher in the AL with a 23-6 record, struck out seven and walked four in going the distance for the ninth time this season. Royals 7, Angels 2 Willie Aikens had two hits, including a two- run homer, to help Kansas City beat California. Dennis Leonard, 18-9, went distance for his eighth victory in the last nine decisions. He allowed only four hits, including Jason Thompson's 18th homer, which accounted for both California runs in the fourth inning.

The victory reduced Kansas City's "magic number" for winning the AL West pennant to five games. Ohio State will duel Syracuse in opener By The Associated Press Syracuse, a football team without a home in 1979 while a new domed stadium was being built, go down the road one more time Saturday. At the end of that road is Ohio State. It could be an exciting way for Syracuse to end its travels before returning home Sept. 20 against Miami of Ohio in it new domed stadium.

It also could be a painful experience. "It doesn't bother a bit what they're said Syracuse defensive end Mike Charles. Well, Ohio State is ranked No.1 and has a good chance of being in that position at the end the season. The Buckeyes have almost everyone back from last year's team that was unbeaten in the regular season and was edged by a point by Southern California in the Rose Bowl. The cast includes an offense led by versatile quarterback Art Schlichter, a typical stout defense and an outstanding kicking game in place kicker Ulade Janakievski and punter Tom Orosz.

While No. 2 Alabama is idle, two of Ohio State's other major contenders for the national championship will be in action in the afternoon. No. 3 Pitt Lertains Boston College and No. 4 Oklahoma is at home against Kentucky.

Other Top Ten teams in action will be No. 5 Southern California at Tennessee and No. 10 Florida State at home against Louisville at night and No. 8 Nebraska hosting Utah in the afternoon. In games involving Top 20 Teams, other, Northwestern is at No.11 Michigan, Texas at No.13 Stanford, New Mexico at No.17 Missouri, Air Force at No.19 Washington and No.

Purdue 20 at Wisconsin in the afternoon, and No.18 Auburn is at Texas Christian at night. Pitt has some injury problems in the defensive line but defensive end Hugh Green is healthy and so is the offense. And that spells trouble for Boston College. Oklahoma no longer has Billy Sims, but the Sooners weren't picked No. 4 in the preseason poll without a reason.

In fact they advanced from No. 5 to No.4 without playing last week. Kentucky edged Utah State 17- 10 in its opener. "We have a lot of unanswered questions," said Coach John Robinson of Southern Cal. Tennessee, nipped 16- 15 last Saturday by No.12 Georgia, should answer a goodly number of them.

Florida State looked solid in blanking Louisiana State 16-0 last week. Louisville doesn't figure to be tougher. The Cardinals lost 24-10 to Miami of Florida last Saturday. Nebraska dropped a notch to No.8 without playing last week. The Cornhuskers should't drop any further and possibly could climb against Utah.
