Chicago, 15. The night express train which leaves this city on the Rock Island road at 1 1 PMl waa Warded byrbh'; bers at Joliet, or more probably at the coal-chute two mile u-t- of-Morris, Sat(udaymorninP who murdered Kellogg Nichols, the express messenger, overcame the baggageman, and robbed the sale of its contents, variously estimated at from 20,000 to 000 in cash and some other valu ables, the am ou nt of which the company alone can tell.

The murder and robbery was not discovered by either the passengers or trainmen" until the train reached Morris. The murderers had then escaped without stopping the train, and there is at present no clew to their identity. At Morris the local express messenger rapped on the express car door, but as the summons was not answered it was thought the train messenger' was asleep. Upon the door of the car being opened the horrible evidences of the desperate struggle and the dead body of Messenger Nichols were discovered. The corpse lay in the farther end of the car, and along the walls and on boxes and other packages were mark of bloody fingers, shovVing that the fight had been bfithe most desperate kind.

Some of these blood stains showed that Nichols had tried to reach the bell-cord and the automatic brake to stop the tram, but had been beaten down. When the body was re moved from the car to the depot one of the hands was found clutching a handful of dark hair, which he had evidently torn from the head of one of his murderers during the struggle. THE INQUEST. A dispatch Irom Morris says an inquest on the victim was begun there. An examination of Nichols' body revealed the fact that there were four bullet holes, three in the head, and one through the arm and body.

The right arm was broken, and the back was pounded up There yere also five deep gashes on the head, which were evidently made by a piece of a round iron bent over in a half circle. This was found hanging upon a nail, and was covered with blood and hair. Canadian Lnmbeinien Starvinjr. Ottawa, March. i3.

It was the purpose to make the new structure a very 'attrac tive one, and the verdict of travelers who have visited all the' great emporiums of, Paris 'afld continental cities is that in it inartistic features thk new store has not an equal in the world." The structure in general' dimensions is 210x120 feet, and is five stories in height. Tas style of the building is the modified classic. The foundation is of rock-faced red sandstone and the superstructure of brick, with trimmings of red sandstone and terra cotta.

The Milwaukee street entrance is through a Ureek portico 01 pure Doric design, with columns and shafts of Scotch granite.
